Human skeletal remains found in Pompano Beach

Remains found in wooded area near W. Copans Road, Blount Road

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating after human skeletal remains were found Friday in Pompano Beach.

BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said in a news release that the remains were found just after 11:30 a.m. in a wooded area near West Copans Road and Blount Road.

A worker who was walking in a wooded area behind a FedEx warehouse found human remains.

BSO's homicide and crime scene units responded to the scene. Homicide detectives are investigating the death.

Authorities have not said whether the remains appear to be that of a male or a female.

The wooded area is often used by squatters and the homeless who set up make-shift camps. However, many have recently left since the county announced plans to clear the land.

People who live in the area said Fort Lauderdale police detectives have been actively looking for a missing person in the area, even posting fliers nearby.

"There was this lady and her dog that stayed down there, and now she's missing," Tyson Rollins said.

"She has been missing for a while, I guess, and she had some people looking for her," Steve Savisky added. "I know who she is. I have seen her around."

BSO detectives have not linked the remains to the woman at this time, but Fort Lauderdale police believe the remains could be that of the woman who was last seen last Christmas.
