Florida reports 13,000 new coronavirus cases Friday, nearly matching previous day

The Florida Department of Health reported 13,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, just shy of the 13,148 cases added a day earlier, which had represented the largest single-day increase since mid-July.

Another 96 resident deaths were also verified.

The state is now up to 1,181,483 total coronavirus cases and 20,401 resident deaths, according to the health department.

Florida has also reported that at least 289 non-resident deaths have occurred here, and there have been at least 59,602 hospitalizations attributed to the novel coronavirus in the state since the start of the outbreak.

The statewide positivity rate from yesterday’s testing was 8.75%.

Deaths confirmed in the past day include 12 in Miami-Dade County, three in Broward County and 12 in Palm Beach County.

The first vaccine shots in the state were given to hospital workers at a few locations Monday, including some employees from Memorial Healthcare in Broward. Jackson Memorial in Miami-Dade received doses Tuesday, and on Wednesday residents at long-term care facilities started to be inoculated.

The latest report on COVID-19 cases in schools across Florida was also released this week.
