Cubans on ‘styrofoam vessel’ picked up off shore of Aventura

SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. – Four Cubans on a “styrofoam vessel” were rescued about five miles east of Aventura on Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

They were picked up by a Coast Guard cutter around 2:15 p.m.

Three were on the vessel and authorities say a good Samaritan helped rescue one Cuban who jumped into the water.

“The four Cubans have no medical concerns and reported leaving Cuba seven days ago,” the Coast Guard said in a statement. “The Coast Guard will be working with interagency partners to work through the standard disposition process.”
