New program helps people who can’t afford water bills

You can donate and give the gift of water to those in need

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – As many continue to struggle financially as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Miami-Dade County is launching a new program to help those who can’t afford to pay their water bills.

It’s called WASD Cares, in reference to the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department, and allows people to donate money that will give the gift of water to their neighbors.

The program hopes to collect $1 million to help support families who need it most.

As funds become available, residents will be able to apply to receive that financial assistance.

“On an annual basis somewhere between 3-4% of our customers fall behind on their bill,” said Josenrique Cueto, interim director of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department. “So the intent is helping those in need. Water is a basic service. Water is incredibly important. Indispensable. And this program is intended to keep the water on for those in our community that most need.”
