FPL demolishes 500-foot-tall stack and chute at its last coal plant in Florida

INDIANTOWN, Fla. – Florida Power & Light demolished the 500-foot-tall stack and chute of its last coal plant in the state Wednesday as the company has ended its use of coal in Florida.

The Indiantown Cogeneration Plant in Martin County is FPL’s last coal-fired plant, which formally closed in December 2020.

According to a news release from FPL, the demolition Wednesday is the company’s “latest step in its journey of leading Florida’s clean energy revolution with affordable, zero-emissions energy investments that have already saved customers more than $11 billion in fuel costs, prevented 165 million tons of carbon emissions and reduced its use of foreign oil by 99% since 2001.”
