3 dead, several others injured after fatal fiery crash on I-95 in Volusia County

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – It was a deadly day on the roads after a crash on I-95 in Volusia County involved more than a dozen vehicles leaving three dead and several injured.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, there was one crash southbound involving six vehicles and four separate crashes northbound involving 11 vehicles.

Troopers say there was ‘zero visibility’ at the time of the crashes and Volusia County has been under a dense fog warning all morning.

“In the crashes in the northbound lane, we had four separate crashes with 11 different vehicles and we had one traffic fatality in one of those four crashes at least three people are dead, several others were taken to the hospital,” Lt. Kim Montes said .

A 20-mile stretch of I-95 was shut down in both directions.

“We did have a child transported out of that vehicle and other people transported. None of those injuries are life-threatening, 15 vehicles including some semi-trucks were involved,” Montes said.

Troopers say a tractor-trailer driver and the SUV driver died as well as a couple of the semi-trucks burned down in the crash.

An investigation into what caused the accidents and led to the fiery explosions is underway.
