Man shot by security guard at Hollywood Publix dies

Initial investigation reveals there was a physical altercation before guard opened fire

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Police are investigating a shooting at a Hollywood Publix supermarket as a homicide after they reported Saturday that the person was dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police responded to the Publix at 1740 Polk St., just off of Hollywood’s Young Circle, on Friday at 10:04 p.m. after a 911 call about a security guard shooting a person in the store.

The store was getting ready to close.

According to an initial investigation, the victim was known to the security guard. Detectives said that the two were involved in a physical altercation just prior to the shooting.

The person who was shot was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital as a trauma alert just after the shooting Friday night where he was pronounced dead. Detectives say that the security guard is cooperating with investigators.

People who spoke with Local 10 News after the shooting said they were not inside, but had friends in the checkout line.

They said people inside the store were instructed to run to the back of the store when shots were fired.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
