Man accused of shooting at girlfriend’s father in Opa-locka

Misael Acevedo, 29, also struck girlfriend multiple times in face, according to authorities

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – Opa-locka police swarmed a neighborhood late Wednesday night, after a man exchanged gunfire with his girlfriend’s father, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The shooting was reported shortly before 11 p.m. near Ahmad Street and Dunad Avenue.

Local 10′s cameras spotted several evidence markers on the ground and multiple cruisers blocking traffic as detectives investigated the crime scene.

According to the suspect’s arrest report, Misael Acevedo, 29, was at his girlfriend’s house when the two got into an argument about Acevedo allegedly threatening to kill her and her father earlier this week.

The woman told police that she got into Acevedo’s car to talk to him and try to work on their issues, but he struck her on the left side of her face with the back of his hand and drove off while she was still inside the vehicle.

Police said the girlfriend saw that Acevedo had a gun in the car and begun to fight with him so she could get out of the vehicle, but he struck her again and threatened to kill her, her family and then himself.

According to his arrest report, Acevedo eventually drove to his grandparents’ home, where he lives.

The couple continued to argue, so the woman says she told Acevedo that she was hungry so he would take her to get fast food and she could possibly escape.

Police said the woman called her father and he met them outside Acevedo’s home.

Acevedo’s grandfather told Local 10 when the two arrived to his home just before 7 the girl’s father was waiting for them

According to the arrest report, Acevedo immediately began firing at his girlfriend’s father once he got out of his car and the victim returned fire.

But police say Acevedo then used his girlfriend as a human shield, at which point the woman’s father put his gun down and told Acevedo to stop shooting and talk with him.

The woman told police that Acevedo put his gun to her head at one point and threatened to kill her.

According to authorities, officers arrived at the scene to find the victim standing next to his car that had bullet holes in the passenger and front-right side.

The victim was standing next to his gun, so a sergeant ordered him to step away from it.

Police say Acevedo then ran across the street, punched the victim in the face and then continued to beat him.

Acevedo was eventually tased by officers and taken into custody.

Authorities said Acevedo told them his mother had taken his gun away before they arrived. They later found it inside the freezer of the grandparents’ home, the report stated.

Police said Acevedo nor the victim suffered any serious injuries from the shooting.

With the gunfire ringing so close to home, nearby residents continue to worry for their safety.

“Someone could’ve been hurt,” said Rhiana Ford, a neighbor.

Jail records show Acevedo was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on charges of attempted murder, false imprisonment with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Acevedo is being held with no bond.
