Parts of Broward County preparing for potential impacts from Subtropical Storm Nicole

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – It may be late in hurricane season but, still, when a storm comes, there are areas of South Florida that know they are likely going to flood, and there are some things you can do just in case.

In some parts of Fort Lauderdale, you might spot one of the No Wake signs along the roadway.

No, they didn’t float out there accidentally. Those no wake signs are being strategically placed in neighborhoods that are prone to flooding as South Florida prepares for potential impacts from Subtropical Storm Nicole.

Because it is so late in the season, residents may have dipped into their storm stash already, so this is a good time to re-stock on any items that might be needed, like water, extra batteries, flash lights, medications, and non-perishable foods.

Meanwhile, regular storm drain cleanings are continuing across the area as crews try to make sure there is somewhere for the extra water to go.

“The strategy to our flood control system is making sure that there’s adequate capacity because when the rain comes it gets intense, it hits our pavement, it hits our yards, and immediately it’s looking for somewhere to go,” said Randy Smith with South Florida Water Management District. “The exit route for storm water here is into the canals.”

Some cities are even getting ready to hand out sandbags on Tuesday.

Fort Lauderdale will be giving them out from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Mills Pond Park and Pompano Beach will do their distribution from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. right across the street from the Pompano Beach Air Park.
