Police: Woman tries to kill husband over postcard from woman he dated 6 decades ago

Police officers arrest 71-year-old woman for domestic violence in Miami-Dade

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A man told police officers that his 71-year-old wife of over 50 years tried to kill him after a postcard from a woman arrived by the mail at their apartment in a gated community in northeastern Miami-Dade County.

Detectives reported the man who lives in North Miami Beach’s Eastern Shores area was “extremely fragile” and he had “several serious bruises and open lacerations ... as well as open bite marks that were bleeding.”

The man said the sender of the postcard had been his girlfriend six decades ago, so this upset his wife, Bertha Yalter, who tried to smother him with a pillow, according to the arrest report.

Police officers arrested Yalter at the apartment shortly after 3:40 p.m., on Sunday, near the intersection of Northeast 169 Street and 35 Avenue, and found video of the attack, records show.

Miami-Dade correctional officers held Yalter without bond. She was facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery on a person who is 65 or older, and tampering with a victim.

Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Ellen Sue Venzer was assigned to preside over the case, court records show.

Detectives were asking anyone with information about the case to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
