Bus carrying Broward students catches fire on side of Florida’s Turnpike

Students, chaperones from Seminole Middle School in Plantation were returning from school trip

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – First responders in Port St. Lucie rushed to the scene of a bus fire involving South Florida students on Friday night.

It happened on Florida’s Turnpike just north of the Port St. Lucie service plaza.

The bus was carrying 47 students, four chaperones and a bus driver.

The students were from Seminole Middle School in Plantation and were returning from a trip to Orlando.

According to Broward County Public Schools, the bus pulled over and everyone was off before the fire started.

Authorities have not provided any information on what started the fire.

No injuries were reported.

Officials said the group walked to the nearby service plaza where they waited for a replacement bus.

Multiple units from several agencies responded to the scene.
