West Kendall raid leads to arrest in Aventura jewelry store smash-and-grab

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A Tuesday morning raid in the West Kendall area of southwest Miami-Dade led to the arrest of a suspect police said was involved in a burglary attempt at an Aventura jewelry store in October.

Aventura and Miami-Dade police took Luis Angel Herrera Ramirez, 31, into custody at a home in the 5700 block of Southwest 162nd Pass.

Police said he was involved in an attempt to steal from the International Jewelers Exchange at 19275 Biscayne Blvd. on Oct. 19.

A group of would-be thieves slammed a vehicle into the front of the store in security staff believe was an attempt to get the safe.

The smash-and-grab attempt caused extensive damage to the store but authorities didn’t believe any of the burglars got away with any merchandise.

Herrera Ramirez is facing charges of smash-and-grab burglary, grand theft auto and criminal mischief, according to police.

“This arrest is just another reminder to those looking to (burglarize) businesses in our city, that the Aventura Police Department will not rest until those who have committed crimes are brought to justice,” Detective Carlos Rivas, an Aventura police spokesperson, said in a news release.

Police said they were still searching for the two other suspects.

Anyone with information was asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
