1 shot, 1 stabbed during ‘altercation’ at Margate home

MARGATE, Fla. – Police detained one person after a shooting and stabbing at a home in Margate late Monday morning.

Authorities responded to the 6900 block of Northwest Fourth Place just before noon.

Lt. Michael Druzbik, a Margate Police Department spokesperson, said the shooting and stabbing were precipitated by an “altercation.”

“One patient has been transported to Broward Health North and another patient was treated on scene,” Druzbik said.

Police said the stabbing victim opened fire on the suspect during the altercation. The suspect is expected to survive, according to police.

A man who said he is the father of the stabbing victim said his son, a handyman, may have been doing work on the property and believes his son shot the suspect in self-defense.

“He said somebody tried to pull a knife on him, tried to kill him,” that man said.

Authorities haven’t said whether they’ve determined what the dispute was about.

Video from Sky 10 showed police handcuffing a shirtless man and placing him in the back of a cruiser.

Druzbik said the police investigation remained “ongoing” Monday afternoon and that there was no threat to the public.
