Foster parent caught with child sex abuse photos at PortMiami after Caribbean cruise, feds say

MIAMI — A Tennessee man disembarking at PortMiami on Saturday after a cruise to the Cayman Islands ended up going to a South Florida jail instead of back home to the Volunteer State.

That’s because authorities said a cellphone search revealed that Jason Alan Miller, 48, of Kingsport, Tennessee, had dozens of photos depicting the sexual abuse of children.

A Homeland Security Investigations agent noted in a criminal complaint that Miller was traveling on the Carnival Horizon with his pregnant wife and eight children, seven of whom were adopted after he fostered them.

The agent also noted that Miller has been a foster parent to about 20 children in Tennessee.

Authorities said they caught Miller after taking him to a secondary inspection and conducting a border search of his Samsung Galaxy cellphone.

Agents said they found dozens of images depicting young girls being raped or otherwise sexually abused. One folder on his phone, according to the complaint, appeared to be labeled to indicate that it contained photos of 6-year-old victims.

Investigators said Miller “admitted” to having child sexual abuse material on his phone.

He was taken north to be booked into the Broward County jail on behalf of the U.S. Marshals Service, records show. He was later transferred back into federal custody.

He faces two federal charges related to the possession and transportation of child sexual abuse material.
