Deputies took 23-year-old Kevin Alvarez into custody on Tuesday in Miami-Dade County on several charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, attempt to flee or elude after an accident, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

The crash occurred on Sept. 10 near the intersection of Southwest 87th Avenue and 50th Street in Miami-Dade’s Olympia Heights neighborhood.

At the time, deputies said they began pursuing Alvarez’s vehicle after observing it stopped in the road and after trying to make contact with the driver, he struck the deputy’s vehicle while trying to take off.

Soon after deputies said a sergeant ordered them to stop the pursuit, they said Alvarez crashed into a tree.

Surveillance video captured the crash and deputies rushing in afterwards to try and help Alvarez. He was listed in critical condition after being taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Now, over two months later, Alvarez has healed enough from his injuries to be taken into custody by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

He made his first appearance before a Miami-Dade judge on Wednesday morning and was granted bond totaling $30.800.

At last check, he was still behind bars at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County.
