Positive update given on MDSO deputy injured after being hit by car

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A Miami-Dade deputy who was seriously injured when he was struck by an SUV is showing major signs of improvement.

Deputy Leonard Cantave was helping a State Trooper investigate a crash along the Florida Turnpike in Doral when the driver of an SUV stuck him, launching Cantave into the air.

According to an arrest report, the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Lonnel Brinson Jr., admitted to using marijuana and alcohol before the crash.

On Thursday, MDSO provided a positive update on Cantave, saying that he is breathing on his own, awake, and alert.

Brinson is facing multiple charges, including reckless driving causing serious bodily injury.
