HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — Police say a 1-year-old boy was attacked by a family dog Friday afternoon in Hallandale Beach.
It happened in the 400 block of Southeast Ninth Street.
According to police, the dog attacked the boy while his mother was changing his diaper.
The boy’s father told Local 10 News that the mother had looked away for just a moment when she heard growling and then the attack began.
After a struggle, the mother was able to pull the boy away. Authorities said he was then airlifted to a local hospital.
Sky 10 flew over the scene as the boy was taken on a stretcher from a helipad into the hospital. The boy’s mother was seen rushing inside shortly after.
Police said they do not yet know the extent of the child’s injuries.
They said Broward County Animal Care is investigating the attack.
The father, who did not want to be identified or appear on camera, said the dog had never shown signs of aggression before the attack.
A short time later, a Broward County Animal Care van arrived at the scene. The dog was placed inside the vehicle and taken away.
A Local 10 News crew was at the scene when the boy’s father was heard saying to the dog, “Love ya, buddy,” while shaking his head as officers looked on. The dog was heard barking from inside the animal control van as it was being transported.
No other details were immediately released.
