2 people rescued after van plunges into water in Fort Lauderdale neighborhood

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Police blocked off the gate to a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood Sunday night after a van crashed into a canal, drawing a large response from officers and firefighters.

A man staying in the community said the van blasted through the entrance gate before ending up in the water.

Video shared with Local 10 News shows dozens of police officers and Broward sheriff’s deputies inside the neighborhood as first responders worked the scene.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials said crews were called after reports that a van had driven into the water.

The witness, Liam Lenihan, said he watched as first responders pulled two people from the vehicle.

“They drove into the water and the guy got rescued. They performed CPR on him. He came back to life, and then the girl didn’t get pulled out until 15 to 20 minutes later,” Lenihan said.

Both victims were taken to a hospital.

Their conditions have not yet been released.

The crash remains under investigation.
