MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — An investigation is ongoing after an on-duty deputy with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office was injured in a crash.
It happened Wednesday around noon at the intersection of Southwest 120th Street and 127th Avenue in southwest Miami-Dade County.
According to authorities, an MDSO motorman was injured in the crash.
Video obtained by Local 10 News shows a black GMC Denali pickup truck coming up behind the motorcycle and hitting the back end, causing the motorman to swerve forward and go down.
The deputy was rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in stable condition by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, officials said.
As investigators worked at the scene, many first responders came to the hospital in a show of support for one of their own.
Steadman Stahl, president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, told Local 10 News that the deputy is lucky things weren’t worse.
“These motormen, they suit up everyday not knowing what’s going to happen,” he said. “He’s lucky to be alive. He really is. He’s lucky the injuries weren’t worse.”
Authorities said the injured motorman was shaken up, but that he’s OK. He has since been released from the hospital.
“He was thankful that he was talking to us,” Stahl said. “He’s thankful he’s OK. He was startled -- anybody would be. Also thankful he’s going home to his family, loved ones.”
One of the deputies at the scene told Local 10 News’ Jackie Pascale the incident was an “oopsie.”
It’s not clear whether any charges will be filed.
The circumstances leading up to the crash are under investigation, according to MDSO.
