Cooper City, Weston and Plantation are all part of the Relay for Life event hosted by the American Cancer Society.

Cancer survivors will lead the first lap.

The event runs from 5 to 10 p.m., starting with school performances, followed by an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. that includes check presentations and a medal ceremony honoring cancer survivors and caregivers.

Throughout the evening, families can enjoy food, games, a kids’ zone and prize drawings. Davie will also be selling pulled chicken and meatball sandwiches to help raise funds.

The goal is to raise $10,000, and organizers say they are close, with just over $1,000 left to reach it.

Everyone was encouraged to wear purple. The event runs until 10 p.m. at Plantation Central Park.
