MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A suspect has been identified and arrested in a stabbing that authorities say occurred Thursday afternoon at a bus stop in northwest Miami-Dade.
They said Xavier Alexander Johnson, 39, was taken into custody later that day by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they responded about 12:35 p.m. to a bus stop near the intersection of Northwest 79th Street and 12th Avenue in the county’s Gladeview area after receiving reports of a man suffering from stab wounds.
When deputies arrived, they found a man with multiple stab wounds to his back.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was listed in critical condition, according to an arrest report.
The report states the victim told deputies that while waiting at the bus stop, Johnson approached him and “inappropriately touched his buttocks.”
The report states the victim then confronted Johnson, who then pulled out a knife and chased him across the street before stabbing him multiple times in the back.
Deputies said the victim later directed them to Johnson who was waiting near the bus stop where the stabbing occurred.
As deputies approached to detain Johnson, he fled on foot, prompting a brief chase during which investigators said he “discarded an object.”
They said he was later apprehended near the 8000 block of Northwest 11th Avenue by detectives and a “school board officer.”
According to the report, surveillance video reviewed by investigators showed the Johnson chasing the victim and “making stabbing motions” toward his back.
Investigators said Johnson was later transported to MDSO’s Northside District for questioning and, after being advised of his Miranda rights, agreed to speak with detectives.
They said Johnson later made a confession that was redacted in the publicly-released report.
Two knives were recovered near where the suspect was found hiding prior to the arrest, authorities said. The weapons were collected as evidence and submitted for forensic testing.
Jail records show Johnson is facing charges including attempted second-degree murder with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and resisting an officer without violence.
As of Friday morning, he was being held without bond at the Miami-Dade Pre-Trial Detention Center.
