Homestead private school teacher arrested for allegedly taping student’s mouth shut

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — A 34-year-old South Florida educator has been arrested following an alleged incident with a student.

On Monday, the Homestead Police Department announced the arrest of Michael Alvarez, a teacher at First United Methodist Christian School located at 622 N. Krome Avenue.

According to authorities, officers responded to the school Monday after receiving reports of a battery.

Officers met with the parents of a student who said their child’s mouth had been taped shut by a teacher following a disagreement, authorities said.

Following an investigation by Homestead police detectives, Alvarez was arrested and is facing a charge of simple battery.

He was taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remained as of Monday night on a $1,000 bond.
