According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened in the waters off Little Palm Island, which is just south of Ramrod Key.

Deputies said the 27-year-old woman, who authorities identifed as Jocelyn Brown, had a dive flag up as the boater sped by and hit her.

Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said occupants of the striking boat recovered Brown from the water and transported her to shore. They confirmed that Brown later died from her injuries.

Authorities have not yet said whether the boater will face charges.

They did confirm that the FWC is handling the investigation.
