BIG PINE KEY, Fla. — Authorities in the Florida Keys arrested a 43-year-old woman who they said struck a deputy while being taken into custody.

The incident happened around 10:26 p.m. on Saturday at Pine Channel Nature Park, located at 29550 Overseas Highway on Big Pine Key.

Deputies noted that the park was not open, as it had closed at 7:30 p.m.

According to authorities, a patrolling deputy observed the suspect, identified as Julie Graham of Port Charlotte, Florida, “seated on a park bench with drug paraphernalia in plain view.”

Deputies said Graham refused to provide identification and attempted to walk away before pulling away and resisting, knocking off the deputy’s glasses, grabbing and striking him as he struggled to handcuff her.

Graham has since been charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence, and being in a park after hours.

Authorities said no serious injuries were reported.

After being medically cleared, deputies said Graham was taken to jail without further incident.
