Deputies: ‘T-bone type collision’ with Tesla causes Honda ‘to split in half’

WEST PARK, Fla. — Edger Surles died in the hospital after a car crash on Saturday night that also injured six others in West Park, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies reported on Monday afternoon.

The drivers involved in the crash shortly before 10:20 p.m. on Saturday at Southwest 46 Avenue and Pembroke Road were 19-year-old Mathis Frederick and Breyon Sampson, according to BSO.

Frederick was traveling eastbound on Pembroke Road in a 2022 Tesla Model Y, and Sampson was driving a 2018 Honda Accord when he was turning from Pembroke Road westbound to 46 Avenue southbound, according to BSO.

In a statement, deputies described the Honda and Tesla crash as a “T-bone type collision” that caused “the Honda Accord to split in half.” Surles was a passenger in the Honda, according to deputies.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue personnel reported taking seven people, including a child, to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital and Memorial Regional Hospital. The cause of the fatal crash remained under investigation.
