FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — In South Florida, many residents know Florida Power & Light as the company they pay each month to keep the lights on.

For many customers, paying the electric bill is routine, with payments often set to autopay and little thought given to the process.

So when a phone call comes in claiming there’s a problem with a home, it can sound believable.

“The state of Florida has recently changed its efficiency standards. Your house has been flagged for an energy compliance review,” one voicemail says.

But the voicemail is not from a real person. It’s AI-generated.

FPL says scams like this are happening more and more frequently.

“Hey it’s Will from Florida Power and Light compliance department,” another voicemail says.

The AI-generated voicemail tells customers to call a number to complete a review and potentially receive money back.

“You can get up to $3,000 dollars in energy rebates and possibly a new air conditioner at no cost,” the message says.

But FPL says whoever is on the other end of the call is trying to collect personal information and demand payments in an attempt to scam customers.

“Call us back immediately and ask for the energy compliance team,” another voicemail says.
