FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Hundreds of job seekers, including former Spirit Airlines employees affected by the company’s sudden shutdown earlier this month, are expected to attend the Port Everglades Career Fair & Expo on Wednesday at the newly expanded Broward County Convention Center.
The free event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature nearly 40 employers offering opportunities in the hospitality, maritime, government, security and logistics industries.
Event organizers said support and resources will be available for former Spirit Airlines workers after the airline ceased operations in early May, leaving roughly 17,000 employees without jobs nationwide.
Major airlines and companies expected to participate include American Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines, along with other employers connected to Port Everglades and the South Florida tourism and transportation sectors.
“Port Everglades is a major economic engine for Broward County that generates jobs in the community and among the maritime companies that conduct business here and call our port home,” Broward County Commissioner Alexandra Davis said in a statement.
“I am committed to inspiring job growth and helping people advance their career goals,” she added.
Organizers said attendees can also receive a $100 credit toward a Florida Atlantic University hospitality industry certificate.
The event is free to attend and includes free parking. Registration is encouraged for planning purposes through Eventbrite. More information is available by clicking here or calling 311.
