BIG PINE KEY, Fla. — A Big Pine Key man is facing several charges after authorities said he was found drunken behind the wheel of a pickup truck with his 6-year-old girl inside on Wednesday; they said he then threatened to rape a sheriff’s deputy’s family members.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies said they received a call at around 8:45 p.m. that a man later identified as Jamie Allan Koval, 38, had drank four Red Bull vodkas and “smoked two joints” and was trying to leave Kiki’s Sandbar, located at 183 Barry Ave. on Little Torch Key.
According to an arrest report, a deputy searching Big Pine Key spotted Koval’s pickup and pulled him over after seeing an unusual driving pattern.
Authorities said the deputy noticed that Koval smelled of alcohol and the girl, under his care, was not wearing a seat belt while in the back seat.
Suspecting he was under the influence, deputies said they asked Koval to participate in a field sobriety test, which he failed.
A deputy wrote in the arrest report that after being placed under arrest, Koval told him, from the backseat of the deputy’s cruiser, that “when he got out of jail he was going to sexually assault my wife” and “was going to get his son to sexually assault my daughter,” then threated to harm the deputy once they got to jail and his handcuffs came off.
Once at the jail, deputies said Koval admitted to being “under the influence of marijuana” and refused to take a breath test.
He now faces charges of DUI with person under 18 in the vehicle, resisting arrest, child neglect, threatening a law enforcement officer, threatening a law enforcement officer’s family and refusal to submit to a breath test.
As of Thursday afternoon, he was being held in MCSO’s Key West jail facility with no listed bond.
Records show he’s set to be arraigned in a Florida Keys courtroom on June 23.
Authorities said they put the girl “in (the) care of family members” and notified the Florida Department of Children and Families.
