PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — A 60-year-old man is facing animal cruelty charges after police say video showed him abusing a 13-year-old male German shepherd and leaving the wounded dog abandoned at a Pembroke Pines shopping center.

According to the Pembroke Pines Police Department, Humberto Exposito was making a delivery to Sedano’s supermarket in the 10300 block of Pines Boulevard Wednesday morning when he allegedly threw the dog, Nico, several feet from the back of a box truck.

Police said Exposito returned to the truck after completing the delivery while Nico remained on the ground and made no effort to help it.

They said Nico was left without food, water, shelter or protection.

Nico is now in the care of Broward County Animal Care, where it is receiving medical evaluation and treatment, according to investigators.

A BCAC spokesperson told Local 10 News that Nico arrived at their shelter malnourished, has matted hair and appears to have advanced hip dysplasia.

A staff member said Nico is “in poor condition, has cancer, is unable to walk, and isn’t doing well.”

Detectives later located Exposito, who they say was arrested and faces one count each of aggravated animal cruelty, abandonment of an animal and confinement of an animal without sufficient air exchange.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.

Exposito appeared in a Broward County courtroom Friday, where a judge set his bond at $12,000 and prohibited him from possessing any animal.
