DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — D’quan Missik was a member of Kids on Fire, a gospel choir at the Dillard Center for the Arts in Fort Lauderdale. His loved ones honored him with song.
The 17-year-old son of Rev. D’Angelo Missik and Nezzie Missick, a church overseer, was described on social media as “respectful,” “kind,” and “sweet.” D’quan’s aunt Akedria White agreed.
“He was special,” White said on Saturday during a memorial service near the canal where he was found dead on July 7.
D’quan had vanished on July 6 after he was last seen at Wawa at Southwest 12 Avenue and West Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach.
“He was always talking about God, what he was going to be, and how he was going to conquer the world,” White said.
D’quan had been helping to babysit his younger cousins before he vanished, according to relatives.
“We weren’t expecting this,” D’quan’s cousin Trice Clark said during the memorial.
Rev. D’Angelo Missik said he and his family need answers. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies were conducting the investigation.
“We are still waiting on the autopsy, we are still waiting on police,” the grieving father said. “We’re trying to process everything. We have our moments; it’s hard.”
