The fire, which erupted at about 8 a.m. Thursday, is burning in the Everglades near Mile Marker 40, just west of U.S. 27.

It has burned 4,400 acres so far and is 20% contained.

On Friday afternoon, those on the highway couldn’t see much of the flames, but smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.

According to Local 10 meteorologist John Gerard, southerly winds should keep most of the smoke away from the western suburbs Friday, but a wind shift to the southwest could allow the smoke to spread more into the western suburbs on Saturday.
