Florida families can begin saving on back-to-school purchases as the state’s annual sales tax holiday gets underway.

The tax holiday runs through Aug. 20, allowing shoppers to purchase a variety of school-related items without paying state sales tax.

Eligible items include:

• Clothing, shoes, backpacks and other bags priced at $100 or less
• School supplies costing $50 or less
• Learning aids priced at $30 or less
• Personal computers costing up to $1,500 when purchased for personal use

To help students prepare for the upcoming school year, the Carey Family Foundation is hosting a shopping spree for 23 children Monday at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Pembroke Pines.

Former Miami Dolphins and University of Miami standout Vernon Carey, along with Latavia Carey and the Carey Family Foundation, will provide each child with $300 to spend on school essentials, including clothing, shoes and other supplies.

The students participating in the shopping event are enrolled in the foundation’s Summer Reading Program at the Carver Ranches Boys & Girls Club.

Organizers say the event is designed to ease the financial burden on families while ensuring students have the supplies they need to start the school year prepared.

“I remember being a kid and me being one of those kids participating in one of these events and people pouring into me, so I wanted to be able to keep that going,” Vernon Carey said.

The shopping spree coincides with the start of Florida’s back-to-school sales tax holiday, giving families another opportunity to stretch their budgets before classes resume.
