FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A witness recorded a video showing a superyacht crash while under the control of a towing boat on Monday in Fort Lauderdale, according to city officials.
Michael Mobile, better known as Mobile Mike, shared the video showing “The Determination” motor superyacht along the New River in the Riverwalk neighborhood.
“A yacht was being towed down the river at an incredibly high speed,” Mobile wrote, according to a post on X. “Right away, I knew something didn’t seem right, so I pulled out my camera.”
Mobile reported he witnessed the crash, which damaged the dock and the roof of a two-story building near Southeast First Avenue and Riverwalk North, and he saw police officers and fire rescue personnel responding.
The crash damaged a stormwater pump station, according to city officials.
Mobile’s cellphone video shows a small boat marked as owned by Steel Towing and “The Determination,” a 112-foot Westport motor yacht, marked as based in Sarasota, Fla.
City crews closed the adjacent sidewalk, placed barriers around the property damage, and a structural engineer was set to assess the building and the seawall, according to city officials.
City employees notified the Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s marine unit and the U.S. Coast Guard, according to city officials. A representative for the towing company couldn’t be reached for comment.
