POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — A man waiting at a bus stop was killed Tuesday morning after authorities say a BMW barreled through a bus bench before crashing into several vehicles at a nearby dealership.
Although the crash scene has been cleared, damage remained on Wednesday where investigators said the car struck the bus bench before hitting several vehicles and coming to a stop.
Investigators also confirmed that the driver had rear-ended another vehicle moments before the deadly crash.
Authorities released 911 calls made moments after the collision.
“I’m on federal just north of McNab (Road) and there was a really bad car accident,” one caller stated.
Another caller described the aftermath of the crash.
“Just saw a really bad accident happen. A car flipped over. It is now the right side up, but it flipped over,” another caller stated.
According to investigators, the white BMW crashed into two concrete light poles, a tree, several unoccupied vehicles and ripped a covered bus bench from its foundation.
One 911 caller expressed uncertainty about the victims.
“I don’t know if the guy is still in the car or he was ejected or someone he hit at the (expletive) bus stop,” the caller stated.
Deputies with the Broward Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday identified the driver as 47-year-old Jo Ann Llera. They said she was behind the wheel at the time of the crash and is expected to survive.
Neighbors said they were shocked to learn Llera was involved in the deadly wreck.
Investigators said the crash sequence began just before 1 p.m. in the 500 block of South Federal Highway, where Llera allegedly rear-ended a Honda Accord. Authorities said she then drove around the vehicle and continued for about four blocks before crashing.
Witnesses described the sound of the impact as resembling an explosion.
“It was like dynamite going off we knew something was wrong right away,” one witness said. “It’s horrific I never seen so much damage in one car you feel for the family.”
As Llera recovers from her injuries in the hospital, witnesses are left wondering what caused the chain of crashes that ended with the death of a man who was waiting at the bus stop.
The victim’s identity has not been released by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities have not announced whether Llera will face any charges.
