MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — An 18-year-old man remains at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center Monday on an immigration hold, days after a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy fatally shot a 17-year-old that was with him inside a Miami Beach apartment unit, records show.
According to online jail records, Valentino Nathaniel Berry was booked into TGK Friday on charges of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, resisting an officer without violence and possession of cannabis.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz confirmed that deputies were serving a search warrant Friday morning at an apartment building in the 700 block of 81st Street in Miami Beach, in connection with possession of firearms violations by a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old.
Cordero-Stutz said the 17-year-old came out of a bedroom when deputies arrived, waving a gun, at which time a deputy fired at the teen, killing him.
According to an arrest report, the warrant was obtained after Berry posted a story to his Instagram page showing him holding an AR-pistol in his waistband. Another animated photo showed him holding a tan and black rifle with the text, “POV: I’m a cartoon,” the report stated.
A detective assigned to the case said that he believed the photo was a real picture that had a cartoon filter on it.
Another Instagram story showed two packages of marijuana covering part of a Glock handgun, the report stated.
According to the report, Berry fled out of the back door of the apartment after the shooting and was taken into custody.
Deputies said they found marijuana on Berry, and a loaded Glock handgun inside of a bedroom.
A records check of the gun revealed that it had been reported stolen in Broward County on June 28, the report stated.
“These two subjects have extensive criminal pasts for firearms violations. They are currently on probation, they are registered gang members and are wearing ankle monitors,” Cordero-Stutz said. “Search warrants are always one of our most dangerous actions that we and all law enforcement face.”
Authorities have not released the identity of the teen who was killed, however a woman named Yvonne Warner told Local 10 News that she believed the teen was her son, Darrell Young.
Jail records show that Young had previously been arrested on an attempted murder charge in Florida City. Records also show he faced separate weapons charges in 2024.
MDSO has not identified the deputy who fired the fatal shots.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
Although jail records show that Berry remains at TGK on an immigration hold, his arrest report lists him as a U.S. citizen.
