MIRAMAR, Fla. — It’s been six weeks since devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela.
The city of Miramar is sending three truckloads of goods to those in the country who need it most.
The items collected in the city are headed to the Global Empowerment Mission warehouse in Doral, where they’ll be sorted and shipped to Venezuelan communities that are still recovering from the earthquakes.
“It’s a long-term effort and we want to continue to make a contribution as much as it needed,” said Miramar Vice Mayor Carson Edwards.
So far, GEM has sent more than 3 million pounds of goods worth an estimated $12 million, which is said to be one of the largest public-private humanitarian responses in Venezuela’s history.
“The community cares,” said Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne. “Although we are diverse, we come together.”
City leaders said the response from the community has been incredible, with donations continuing to pour in over the last several weeks to help families who lost so much.
“We are one people, we are all one people,” said Miramar Commissioner Maxwell Chambers.
Officials say the city will continue to accept donations to help Venezuela for as long as they need to.
GEM provided the following updates to their Venezuelan donation collections amounts since the earthquakes:

Total Value of Aid: $15,108,946.89
Total Weight: 4,008,828 pounds
Total GEM Family Necessity Kits: 79,320
