DORAL, Fla. — The Global Empowerment Mission, a Doral-based nonprofit that was distributing aid in Venezuela after the 7.2 and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes on June 24, deployed a team on Monday to western Colombia.

The epicenter of the 7.4-magnitude earthquake was in Colombia’s San José del Palmar, a municipality in Chocó, a region on the Pacific with the country’s largest population of impoverished Black Colombians.

“We believe we can buy food in Colombia,” said Michael Capponi, GEM’s founder and president. “It will be a lot more efficient.”

Capponi said the nonprofit’s team will also need to distribute thousands of tents, sleeping bags, blankets, and camping gear to help those who won’t be able to go back home.
