OPA-LOCKA, Fla. — A suspect connected to a felony investigation was taken into custody Monday morning after allegedly firing a gun at officers during a police pursuit that traveled from Miami Gardens into Opa-locka, authorities said.
According to a news release from the Opa-locka Police Department, its officers were called to assist Miami Gardens police during an active vehicle pursuit.
Police said the suspect fired a gun at pursuing officers while fleeing Miami Gardens and entering Opa-locka.
Opa-locka officers responded to assist Miami Gardens police as the pursuit continued.
The chase eventually ended near Northwest 107th Street and Northwest 17th Avenue, where authorities took the suspect into custody, according to Opa-locka police.
A separate scene was established near Northwest 22nd Avenue and Northwest 135th Street, where police said a Miami Gardens officer was involved in a crash during the pursuit.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene.
Officials did not immediately provide information about the officer’s condition or say whether anyone else was injured in the crash.
Authorities also have not released the suspect’s identity or additional details about the felony investigation that preceded the pursuit.
Opa-locka police emphasized that the information released so far is preliminary and said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Additional details about the underlying investigation, pursuit, arrest and officer-involved crash are expected to be released by the appropriate investigating agencies.
“The City of Opa-locka Police Department remains committed to working collaboratively with our neighboring law enforcement partners to protect our communities and ensure the safety of residents and law enforcement personnel,” the OLPD stated in the news release.
