MIAMI — A Miami man is facing DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges in connection with an April Flagler Street crash in which police said he was both drunken and high and driving more than 80 mph.
Police took Maykel Mulet Sanchez, 28, into custody at his home in the Grapeland Heights neighborhood on Monday.
According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department, the crash happened just after 5:45 p.m. on April 18 in the 6000 block of West Flagler Street, in the city’s Flagami neighborhood.
Police said vehicle data showed Mulet was going 83 mph one second before he crashed into the other driver, who was making a right turn from Northwest 60th Avenue.
The MPD report states that Mulet hit the other driver, who wasn’t identified, at an angle, having “attempted an evasive maneuver by steering to the left.”
Police said Mulet drove “onto the sidewalk, through bushes and ultimately collided with the wall of an apartment complex.”
Medics took the other driver to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead. They also took Mulet to the same hospital with a possible fractured jaw and noticed he smelled of alcohol, according to the report.
Results of a toxicology test received in May showed his blood alcohol content was 0.11%, over the legal limit, and he had marijuana in his system, the report states.
Authorities said after being taken into custody on Monday, Mulet invoked his right to remain silent.
As of Tuesday morning, Mulet was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $20,000 bond. If he posts bond, he’ll be on house arrest.
