LA GUAIRA, Venezuala — People in both Colombia and Venezuela are in need of aid following devastating earthquakes striking the two South American nations.
In the largest tent camp in the Venezuelan coastal state of La Guaira, hundreds live day to day, trying to meet their basic needs and sometimes unable to meet them.
Gabriel Colmenares, while holding his 3-month-old son, said the baby needs a cream for a rash on his back which he hasn’t been able to find.
Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez announced Monday afternoon that Venezuela would send humanitarian aid to Colombia, but at the sites of collapsed buildings, Venezuelans say they still need help.
Dr. Livys Quintero works at an emergency clinic set up by a collapse site.
She says it’s thanks to international aid that they have medical supplies, but is worried that the aid may slow down.
On the other side of the building, Valeria Alcala showed reporter Cody Weddle the hole where she thinks the bodies of her mother and stepfather are located.
New crews from Mexico were scheduled to arrive there on Wednesday, but they may now be diverted to Colombia.
Alcala said please don’t forget about us, but also please help Colombia.
It was a message repeated by many: please send aid quickly to Colombia, but please remember that Venezuelans continue to struggle as well.
