MIAMI — Three people were arrested Tuesday after Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detectives said they stopped a vehicle shortly after its driver left Miami Central High School and found two loaded guns inside.
The suspects were identified as Garlens Junior Jean-Philippe, 21, Garvens Jean-Philippe, 18, both of North Miami, and Kanarious Jerome Harris, 17.
Deputies said their arrests followed a traffic stop shortly after the vehicle left the school grounds.
The report states that an MDSO detective was conducting surveillance in northern Miami-Dade County around 2:12 p.m. Tuesday when he spotted a black 2025 Mercedes-Benz C300 near Northwest 96th Street and Seventh Avenue.
Deputies said that the suspected vehicle was known to law enforcement after its driver previously fled the scene in an unrelated case. Detectives also noted that the vehicle’s front windshield was tinted past the legal limit and that its front windows had a measured opacity of 5%.
Detectives began covert surveillance and followed the Mercedes to Miami Central High School, located at 1781 NW 95th St., according to the report.
The report states that Garlens Jean-Philippe was driving, Garvens Jean-Philippe was in the front passenger seat, and Harris was sitting in the rear passenger seat at the time of the incident.
Detectives said they watched as the car entered the school’s parking lot and remained there for about 10 minutes. They said no one was seen entering or exiting the vehicle during that time. The Mercedes then left the school grounds, with detectives continuing to follow it, according to the report.
Deputies then conducted a traffic stop near Northwest 13th Avenue and 123rd Street, the report states.
After the three occupants were ordered out of the vehicle, a MDSO detective reported seeing a loaded Glock .40-caliber handgun on the front passenger-side floorboard. The gun was within immediate reach of Garvens Jean-Philippe, according to the report.
Detectives said they also found a loaded Milsport .300 BLK-caliber AR-style pistol on the rear bench seat, next to and within immediate reach of Harris, the report states.
“Both firearms were not securely encased and readily accessible for immediate use,” a deputy wrote in the report.
The report also notes that classes were not in session at the time, but the school was “active and open to teachers and administrators.”
According to the report, Garlens Jean-Philippe claimed ownership of the firearms and made “spontaneous statements” to detectives acknowledging that the AR-style pistol had been left within Harris’ reach. He also said he was unaware that the law prohibited that, the report states.
Jail records show Garlens and Garvens Jean-Philippe were later transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, while Harris was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center, according to the report.
Records show Garlens Jean-Philippe is facing one count each of illegal possession of a firearm on school property and contributing to delinquency/ dependency of a child. Gavens Jean-Philippe is facing one count each of illegal possession of a firearm on school property and illegal possession of a firearm by a minor.
As of Wednesday, both men remained at TGK, where their bonds were listed as “to be set.”
Authorities have not released a mugshot or details about the charges for the Harris.
