MIAMI — A woman is facing an aggravated battery charge after police say she repeatedly struck another woman with a cellphone during a fight inside the restroom of a Miami restaurant.
Miami police said Lesly Gisselle Flores, 29, who resides in the city’s Riverside neighborhood, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the Aug. 9 incident that occurred at La Porteña Cafeteria, located at 503 SW 17th Ave.
The report states that officers were dispatched to the restaurant shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a “fight in progress.”
Police said the victim told officers she was washing her hands when Flores began shoving her out of the way to use the sink.
The report states that Flores told detectives the victim was washing her hands when she asked whether she could use the sink. Police said Flores claimed the victim responded, “Did your mom not show you any manners?”
Flores then said she told the victim, “Don’t bring my mom into this,” and claimed that the victim then punched her in the face, according to the report. Flores said she punched the victim back and that the two women became involved in a fight, the report states.
The victim initially told officers she did not fight back and instead tried to cover herself while Flores continued striking her until a manager and other people intervened, according to the report.
The report states the victim told detectives Flores then repeatedly struck her in the left eye with a cellphone.
It states that the victim claimed the blows from Flores caused significant injuries, including an orbital fracture and damage that required surgery.
She also told deputies that when she tried to get up, Flores bit her underneath her left arm and in the chest area, preventing her from standing or defending herself, according to the report.
An employee eventually intervened and pulled Flores from the restroom, the report states.
Deputies said the victim’s friend reportedly saw two cellphones on the floor. The victim told detectives one belonged to Flores and was the phone used to strike her, they said.
Detectives later showed the victim a photo lineup, and deputies said she identified Flores as the woman who attacked her.
Deputies said they arrested Flores Monday night and transported her to MDSO’s Violent Crimes Office for questioning. According to the report, detectives read Flores her Miranda rights, and she chose not to speak without a lawyer.
Jail records show Flores is facing one count of aggravated battery with a weapon causing great bodily harm.
As of Wednesday, Flores was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where her bond was listed as “to be set.”
A motive for the attack is unclear at this time.
