MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami Gardens police have identified a 23-year-old man who they say fired multiple rounds into an occupied home and later exchanged gunfire with a detective before leading officers on a pursuit that ended in Opa-locka.
Karyne David, who resides in the county’s West Little River neighborhood, was arrested Monday by the Miami Gardens Police Department following the overnight incident, according to an arrest report.
Jail records show he is facing two counts each of attempted premeditated murder with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a firearm and shooting or throwing a deadly missile.
Polic said the incident began with a domestic violence-related shooting reported Sunday night at a Miami Gardens home, where multiple rounds were fired into the occupied residence.
The arrest report details allegations involving David’s ex-girlfriend, who told investigators the couple had been dating for about a year before their relationship ended in April following “infidelity” issues.
According to the report, the woman said David continued contacting her from different phone numbers after their breakup, making threats and showing up unannounced at her home. She also told investigators that her car had been vandalized several times since June and that she believed David was responsible.
The woman provided investigators with messages between her and David from her cellphone, the report states.
Police said one of those messages from David to his ex-girlfriend stated, “Next time it will be worse so don’t be outside.”
Investigators said they also interviewed two people who were inside the home during the shooting. They said David’s ex-girlfriend told police that she was asleep in her mother’s room because she was already afraid following an earlier shooting at the home that night.
A second person inside the home told police she heard loud sounds striking the residence and attempted to look outside to determine what was happening, according to the report.
As part of the investigation, a MGPD Special Victims Unit detective was conducting surveillance in the area at about 4:15 a.m. Monday, the report states.
The responding detective told investigators he saw a Black Honda Accord parked near the home and later observed David standing in the roadway with a rifle, police said.
The detective told investigators he saw David shoulder the rifle, followed by a muzzle flash and several gunshots. Police said the detective then returned fire.
David then got into the Honda Accord and fled, prompting a pursuit involving the detective and other Miami Gardens officers, police said.
According to the report, the detective and other officers pursued the vehicle, which came to a stop near Northwest 107th Street and 17th Avenue in Opa-locka, where officers took David into custody.
After David’s arrest, a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit searched the area and located a Century Arms Draco rifle in the grass near where David was taken into custody, the report states.
Authorities said further testing determined the rifle was a match to shell casings recovered from both the Aug. 9 shooting and the shooting at the home.
Police said David was arrested and transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
As of Friday morning, David remained in custody at TGK with his bond listed as “to be set.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting involving the Miami Gardens detective. No officers or detectives were injured during the shooting and subsequent pursuit, authorities said.
