HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — A witness recorded a video of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s agents using a vehicle to pin a man against a fence to detain him on Aug. 10 in Hallandale Beach.

The video caused outrage among activists from several organizations, including the Guatemalan-Maya Center, who met to protest on Monday afternoon at Hallandale Beach City Hall.

“With TPS ending we have experienced an escalation in ICE activity across South Broward and North Miami. ICE is targeting our neighborhoods who are simply trying to build a life here and to chase the American dream,” said Rubi Michele, an activist with 50501.

Other advocates included Marie Lisme, Dayna Marie Foster, Nicole Locklin, Lindsay McElroy, and Oliver Larkin.

“These 287(g) agreements, these incidents with ICE, they’re breaking our society in a lot more ways than family separation,” said McElroy, who works with the with the Guatamalan Maya Center. “They’re breaking trust in law enforcement, they’re breaking families apart, and they are violating our constitutional rights.”

The demonstrators were calling for the Hallandale Beach Police Department to document federal misconduct and avoid partnering with ICE.
