MARGATE, Fla. — A 40-year-old mother and her 2-year-old son died Sunday after they were reportedly struck by lightning in Margate, police said.
Margate Police and Margate Fire Rescue responded at about 2:30 p.m. to a 911 call about two people who had been struck by lightning and were found lying on a sidewalk near 7900 Northwest 1st Street.
First responders immediately began treating the victims, including performing CPR, according to police.
The woman, identified as Kenya Glasgow, was taken by Margate Fire Rescue to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach. The 2-year-old boy was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale with a police escort.
Despite efforts by first responders and medical personnel, both mother and son died shortly after arriving at the hospitals.
The incident remains under investigation by the Margate Police Department.
Police expressed their condolences to the family and loved ones of the victims.
