FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A South Florida man is awaiting extradition to South Carolina after being nabbed in connection with a multimillion-dollar sweepstakes scam targeting mostly seniors, according to court documents obtained by Local 10 News on Monday.

Evans Class Brown, 27, of Coral Springs, is one of several people facing federal charges including wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering.

A March news release from federal prosecutors in Charleston, South Carolina, where the case is being tried, identified five of Brown’s accused co-conspirators as Charleston residents Kemar Christopher Edwards, 28; Xavier Gordon, 25; Warner Gordon, 27; and Kevin Milton Simpson, 30; as well as another Floridian, Tashagae Narcia Leslie, 25, of Orlando.

Two other co-defendants are identified in a Jan. 28 grand jury indictment as Justine Danielle Smith, 34, who federal court records show was arrested in June in Connecticut, and Marcia Minora Lawrence.

Federal authorities said the scammers convinced victims that they had won cash prizes in sweepstakes, but before receiving their winnings, they had to pay taxes and fees. Authorities said the 100-plus victims, “a substantial portion” of whom were seniors, sent the group money through the mail or by wire transfer.

Prosecutors said the group then laundered the money and sent a portion of the proceeds to co-conspirators in Jamaica, keeping some of the funds for themselves.

The victims lost more than $3.5 million as part of the scam, authorities said.

Brown was taken into custody on Wednesday and was being held in the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail facility in Fort Lauderdale on behalf of the U.S. Marshals Service, as of Monday afternoon.

It wasn’t immediately clear when he was scheduled to be taken to South Carolina.

The suspects could face decades behind bars if convicted.
