MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A security guard at a South Florida Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility was caught on camera stealing more than $5,000 from a detainee, authorities said.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies said they were called out to the Krome Service Processing Center, located at 18201 SW 12th St., on Monday afternoon after receiving a report about the theft.

An MDSO arrest report states that while staff members were preparing deportation documents, the detainee told them that he was missing $5,382.

Authorities said they reviewed surveillance footage that showed Matthew Christian Torres, a 31-year-old security guard employed by Akima Protective Services, placing the man’s money inside a log book, never logging it and instead “concealing the money inside his black jacket and enter(ing) a employee restroom.”

“(Torres) then returns to the property common area and removes the clear plastic bag containing the money from the inside of his chest area,” a deputy wrote in the report, describing the video. “(He) then places the money inside the right pocket in beige cargo pants. It should be noted that (Torres) never advised a supervisor of the money belonging to the victim.”

Deputies took Torres, of Palmetto Bay, into custody on a third-degree grand theft charge.

As of Tuesday morning, Torres was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $2,500 bond.
