HIALEAH, Fla. — A 34-year-old Florida City man is facing charges after allegedly assaulting a person he loaned money to, according to investigators.
The incident occurred on Thursday, Aug. 6 outside of Sedano’s Supermarket, located at 950 E. Fourth Ave. in Hialeah.
According to the Hialeah Police Department, the suspect, Carlos Alvarez, loaned the victim $4,000 several days prior in order for him to purchase a vehicle.
Then on Aug. 6, police said Alvarez called the victim and asked for them to meet outside the supermarket.
According to authorities, the two conversed at first, but at one point, the victim began a video call with his girlfriend. During the call, police said Alvarez returned to his car and retrieved a gun, then went back to the victim and struck him in the face with it.
As the victim tired to get away, Alvarez fired two shots at the victim, according to an arrest report.
The report states that after the shooting occurred, Alvarez fled the scene and called the victim, who had retreated into the supermarket, telling him not to call the police.
Authorities said the victim waited a brief time before leaving the supermarket, at which time Alvarez returned and exited his vehicle, approached the victim and began punching him before again fleeing the scene.
Police said neither Alvarez or the victim were still there when officers arrived. It wasn’t until a week later on Aug. 13 that the victim reported the incident at the Hialeah Police Department’s main station, located at 5555 E. Eighth Ave.
Investigators obtained surveillance video from the area of the incident that corroborated the victim’s sworn statement, according to an arrest report.
Police said Alvarez was located at his home on Tuesday by members of HPD’s Major Crimes Unit and taken into custody.
Jail records show he is now facing charges of attempted second-degree murder with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
As of Wednesday morning, Alvarez was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with bond listed as “to be set.”
