SURFSIDE, Fla. — The memorial in honor of the 98 people who died after the Champlain Towers South building collapsed in 2021 will include 13 “pillars of light” with rebar and debris from the site in Surfside, according to city officials.
The city released renderings on Friday showing a memorial wall displaying the 98 names, near a water feature, and a graphic of clasped hands with a written message: “Love Lives On.”
“For five years, this community has carried the weight of remembering 98 friends and neighbors without a permanent place to do so,” Mayor Shlomo Danzinger said in a statement. “This memorial gives us that place.”
The memorial will be at the end of 88th Street and Collins Avenue, and the budget is about $3.5 million, including a $1 million grant from the state, according to city officials.
“It is tasteful, it is dignified, and it was shaped by the very people who loved them most,” Danzinger said. “A memorial cannot undo what happened here, but it can give a town a way forward. Now we have a permanent place to hold our neighbors in our hearts, and to heal together as a community.”
The city has yet to announce when the memorial will be unveiled.
