MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Miami Beach police officers lifted an SUV to free a woman who became trapped underneath it after a crash involving an e-scooter Monday night, authorities said.

The crash happened at about 9:43 p.m. near 71st Street and Bay Drive East, according to Miami Beach police.

Authorities said a blue Jeep was exiting the Marathon gas station at 875 71st St. and turning right to head west on 71st Street when it struck the woman, who was riding an e-scooter eastbound on the sidewalk.

Police said the impact threw the woman from the scooter, and she became pinned beneath the Jeep several feet away from where the crash occurred.

They said responding officers worked together to lift the vehicle while others spoke with the injured woman and tried to keep her calm. The officers were eventually able to free her.

She was taken by Miami Beach Fire Rescue to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, authorities confirmed.

“These officers demonstrated exactly what we expect from those who wear the MBPD badge — courage, compassion and a commitment to protecting life,” said Miami Beach Police Department Chief Wayne Jones. “They recognized the urgency of the situation, acted without hesitation and worked together to free a woman trapped beneath a vehicle. I am incredibly proud of their swift and selfless response.”

Police confirmed that the driver of the Jeep was cited for causing the crash.
